6th Grade Math

Teacher: Kathryn Gomes

Required Textbooks: Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Level 6 Student Workbook and Teaching Guide/Answer Key

**Recommended but not Required: Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Level 6 Skillsbook (price and details to follow once it is released this spring)

Course Description: In our 6th grade math course, students will embark on an exciting journey through the fundamental concepts of arithmetic, geometry, and algebra. Through engaging activities, real-world examples, and collaborative problem-solving, students will deepen their understanding of number operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, and basic algebraic expressions. Additionally, students will have weekly skills practice assignments that follow a spiral review of previously covered concepts. These are all provided in the Level 6 skillsbook.

Classroom Work: Class time will be dedicated to reviewing and previewing key concepts. We will also dedicate time to playing the math review games from the book and working on open-ended problem-solving sessions together. I plan on completing all six unit projects in class as well as some of the more involved lessons (like building zip lines!).

Homework: We will complete the full book. A typical week will consist of 4 lessons. Additionally, students will have a skills practice assignment that reviews a previously taught skill. Students can expect to spend about 45 minutes per day on math.

Placement Test: All interested students should complete this placement test before registering. This is so we can make sure the class is a good fit and so that Kathryn has an accurate sense of everyone’s background knowledge.
